Viagra is one of the drugs most often marketed by Pfizer, with sales in 1998 of about $3.4 billion.
The drug has been on the market for more than two decades and it has been approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for treating impotence.
It's not known when Viagra will be available in New York, the person with knowledge of the matter said.

Pfizer said it had not received any warning about the potential risks of taking the drug. Pfizer said it will continue to sell the drug to customers.

A new bill will enable the U. S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania to charge people under the age of 18 who buy sildenafil — the generic version of the prescription drug Viagra — with the federal Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) investigation of its alleged illegal marketing of Viagra. The bill, introduced in a letter sent to the FDA by former U. Attorney James R. Berman, has been filed by the states and is expected to take effect in June.
Berman is an investigator for the U. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and is one of the attorneys representing individuals accused of illegally marketing prescription drugs in the U. and abroad.
The new bill would require patients to show a doctor that they buy the generic version of Viagra. The law requires the FDA to investigate if the FDA finds a generic drug — not the brand name — poses a health risk.
“These new findings will help patients who believe that they are suffering from erectile dysfunction and want to make an informed decision about their health,” said Dr. David Scholl, a urology specialist at the Cleveland Clinic. “The FDA will need to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the safety and efficacy of Viagra or any other generic drugs.”
The FDA is investigating a variety of possible explanations for the illegal marketing of prescription drugs.
Berman and other U. Attorneys are investigating the allegations. The states have filed a motion requesting that the FDA approve the new legislation, but that the agency will not require the FDA to do so.
The new bill would have the following language in place: “The FDA has no jurisdiction to issue any regulation of drug manufacturing or to issue any ruling regarding the efficacy or safety of drugs for which Viagra is indicated. The FDA has no jurisdiction to issue any regulations for prescription drugs for which Viagra is indicated.”
The new law would prohibit the sale of Viagra to patients under the age of 18. The drugs will still be approved by the FDA. But there is a possibility that the FDA can determine whether the drugs are safe or effective for the individual patient.
If the FDA determines that the drugs are safe and effective for the patient, the law would allow patients to sue the FDA for any violations. The new bill would require the FDA to investigate the FDA and then seek a federal investigation if a violation is found.
Attorneys are investigating the allegations against Berman.
The FDA has no jurisdiction to issue any regulations for prescription drugs for which Viagra is indicated.
